Swans Island All American Worsted is an aran- to worsted-weight, 2-ply, 75% wool / 25% alpaca yarn with 210 yards per 80 gram skein. This woolen-spun 2-ply yarn embodies rustic sophistication. Alpaca fiber from small East Coast farms is blended with Rambouillet wool from the Erk Ranch in South Dakota, where raising sheep has been a family tradition for over 100 years. These quality fibers are scoured, de-haired then carded and spun at a historic New England mill. Hand dyed in gorgeous slightly heathered colors in Maine at Swans Islands’ North port studio, this yarn is a truly All American product.
All Swans Island Company goods begin with natural fibers, sourced to the highest possible standard. Much of their fiber comes from local New England farms, domestic, family-run farms that have been caring for their flocks for generations. Their organic Merino wool, sourced from South America, has been certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard, the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. Fleece from those farms is custom spun for Swans Island Company by New England mills on trusty vintage machinery. From there, every skein of Swans Island yarn is dyed by hand in their Northport, Maine dye house, housed in an 1800s post-and-beam farmhouse. This allows them to create uniquely saturated colorways that can’t be achieved in large-scale dye lots. Many of Swans Island yarns are dyed using naturally derived pigments like cohineal, indigo, and madder root. Others are skein-dyed with low-impact dyes to achieve their singular depth of color while also reducing their water and energy usage, and offering unique qualities to the discerning knitter, like machine washability. They make each dye bath with their own custom recipes, expertly working the fibers in order to achieve their signature rich, variegated tones.
